Lee at age 8

Keeping the sidewalks safe for good citizens

Lee in his own words:

My name is Lee Kirkham. I currently reside in Gilbert, AZ (just outside Phoenix) with my wife Louise and my daughters Erika, 7, and Tallis, 3. I am originally from San Jose. CA, more or less in the heart of what is known as Silicon Valley. I lived there until moving here to Gilbert in February of 2000. My hero has always been Batman. As a kid I always thought Batman was the coolest hero, he had a cool costume in cool colors, had a cool sidekick who was a kid, and had a cool car to drive in.

I myself am VERY much a product of the TV generation, it was my friend, my oasis. I was a shy kid so the TV was an easy friend to rely on. One thing I should point out at this juncture is that I was born on October 31st, that's right, Halloween. So in addition to getting presents on my birthdays, I also had the fun of dressing up in costumes and getting a ton of candy. Lucky me. Growing up in the late 60's to late 70's I got a lot of exposure to the Batman series, albeit in reruns. This being the case, my toybox reflected my love of Batman. I had the MEGO dolls, the corgi car, and tons of hand-me-down comic books from my brother Chuck who was ten years older than me. One thing that I am aware of that had a profound effect on me from watching Batman is that my vocabulary became increasingly more vast than that of my peers in school. Now granted, there is some verbage that one would rarely use in a typical 8 year olds life, but I knew it...because Batman taught me. And because Batman was so smart and my hero, I wanted to be smart too. And who says that all TV is bad?

As I grew older and began to distance myself from some of the more "childish" elements of life, I began to see the TV show differently, and began to enjoy it all over again.  I was growing up and understanding the absurdist qualities of the humor. Other facets of my life would also bring me back to the Batcave as well. In Junior High School I befriended a fellow who exposed me to the surf music duo, Jan & Dean.  As I became a fan of this dynamic duo, imagine my surprise and elation to find that they had an entire album dedicated to Batman and Robin.

Now well into adulthood, my life is full of happy things, such as my wonderful wife, my two lovely daughters (who both know that Adam is the TRUE Batman) and many friends, all of whom know that Batman is a large and fun part of knowing me. I have made, what I consider to be many friends on the Batman Message Board on David Sutton's marvelous website. I now work in graphic and web design and enjoy meeting new people all the time. It's funny for me to meet someone and have them look at my work and ask, "Did you read a lot of comic books when you grew up?" Why yes I did, and I watched a lot of Batman!

One last thing, I want to thank Scott for allowing me and everyone else to share on this site. I really think this site captures the visually fun aspects of the series, and I look forward to seeing it evolve over time into something very special. Cheers!
